A Home at the End of the World

Don’t laugh, but Colin Farrell discovers his inner fluffy bunny in this sensitive drama about the urge to belong. He’s totally persuasive as sweet-natured twentysomething charmer Bobby, who arrives in early ’80s Greenwich Village after a Midwest upbringing marked by tragedy and abandonment, to hook up again with Jonathan (Dallas Roberts), his best friend through their teenage years of fumbling discovery. The bond between them is put to the test however, in a decidedly unconventional ménage-à-trois, since Bobby moves into the flat openly gay Jonathan shares with Claire (Robin Wright-Penn), a ‘kooky’, slightly broody older woman who scrapes a living as a hat designer. As the storyline runs through successive variations on boy meets boy meets girl, sexually ambiguous Bobby soothes everyone’s emotional wounds, but is he suppressing his own needs at the expense of others?

The film's most pleasing aspect was the wonderfully crafted relationships among the four adult characters, played by Farrell, Roberts, Wright Penn and Spacek. They were convincing, and drew the audience into the entire complex of the the interaction between the characters, even among those I've spoken to who identified more strongly with one of them. These scenes are crafted very well, and display the director's skill from live theatre. This part of the movie, I wanted to see more of. Yes, folks, Colin Farrell can indeed act; you'll find many different shadings in his performance, and a vulnerability you probably haven't seen before. Dallas Roberts, who was nominated for an Outer Drama Critics' Circle award for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in "Nocturne" in New York, and who recently finished a run of a two man play with none other than the renowned Sam Shepherd, does an extremely fine job. He maintains honesty and intensity, and isn't drawn into the easy trap of trying to play the whole weight of the drama at once. He keeps himself firmly in each moment. Robin Wright Penn turns in a delightful performance in a character whose range of outlook on life is wide and complex. Sissy Spacek is simply superb; aside from the tendency to like her in whatever she does, her character took only moments to become highly engaging. The scenic design and location choices were notably excellent.

This movie, which unfortunately has yet to receive wide distribution, is definitely worth seeing. Not only does it feature fine performances and direction in the latter part of the story, but it raises questions about what "family" really IS, and who gets to decide what that definition should be? That makes it a VERY timely film. Unless you've read the book, you probably can't tell what's going to happen at each stage, and you may find yourself with more questions than answers by the time the end credits roll. A piece of art that ASKS questions and doesn't claim to provide all the answers is to be valued and appreciated. It's also unusual for Hollywood to produce, given their corporately-driven tendency to release "neat and packaged" films. It allows far more room for the audience to make up their OWN minds, and thus displays more respect for them. In my opinion, it was this aspect of the script that enabled the producers to draw in three "name" stars, and give us a welcome introduction to the highly talented Dallas Roberts, whose performance takes no back seat to any of the others.

SYNOPSIS: It is summertime in a blue-collar, marginal district of a city in the South of Spain. Tano, a teenager currently serving a sentence in a juvenile reform center, is given a 48-hour leave to attend his brother's wedding. Together with his best friend Richi, Tano plans to enjoy his 48-hour pass to the limit, doing all the things he is normally prohibited from doing. He gets drunk, takes drugs, steals, has sex and hangs out with his buddies. He feels free and exerts that freedom with all the force and audacity of a teenager. By the end of his 48-hour pass, Tano has also witnessed the collapse of all the things he takes for granted in his life: the neighborhood, his family, friends and loved-ones - everything is somehow different for him. More than just two days of freedom, Tano's leave turns out to be a journey into maturity.

3 Day Weekend

The whole premise revolves around three friends who have a long-running tradition of going to a cabin out in the woods of Big Bear Valley to relax and do the "same old same old" bonding with nature routine. This year they decide to shake things up, and each invite a single friend to come along. In an homage to both The Boys in the Band as well as Love! Valour! Compassion!, the film does the usual cinematic gay party where everybody finds out unexpected things about themselves and each other. We get witty banter, contemplation on what relationships mean, and enough revolving partners to keep things interesting. It all plays out as a light dramatic comedy with plenty of full frontal nudity, and the marriage of flesh and melodrama should keep queer cinema fans satisfied.

It's an actor's film, and luckily the low budget production has found an ensemble made up of guys who desperately want the exposure and care about doing a great job. It's interesting to see this group take on the script, and we get a look at some of the raw talent hidden in the gay community of Los Angeles. Derek Long stands out with his deep voice and "sexy daddy" good looks, and he's an interesting study in how to be cast as the "old man" while still coming across as earnest and hot. Daniel Rhyder does enough with his hustler character to reveal a man who has true emotions about his clients rather than just a mercenary call boy out for good times and a fee. He's tender, and does a spectacular job of revealing so much more than just his body. Gaetano Jones gets the thankless comic relief bit as the new age nude yoga guru, but he somehow rises above that role's lack of costuming handily enough to make us see a real person. Derek Meeker and Douglas Myers act out the most theatrically shrill scenes as the couple at odds with each other, but thankfully they both can play quiet as well as they can screaming harpy. The rest of the young eye candy roles are filled out by actors who do a fine job, especially Chris Carlisle who is the computer nerd unsure if anybody will find him sexy. These guys are all up to the challenge of the film, and handle the dialogue and love scenes with grace and wit.
